Our People

There are many factors that govern the success of any organisation but the one constant is people. Our talent underpins everything that we achieve within our business: growth; innovation and efficiency gains. It’s all about our people.

One of our core values is that ‘we operate safely and develop people to make the right decisions at the coal face’.

We use a framework of mentor-based management development programmes, leadership essentials courses and driver training programmes to ensure that we have the best people ready to take on new opportunity.

Meet some of the team:

Jim Hill

Fleet Operations Manager

I previously worked for an owner driver contracted to Mobil and then transferred to Allied Petroleum in the early part of 2000 as a driver. Today I am the Fleet Operations Manager with a team of 50 drivers and operational office staff reporting to me. I have helped to make Allied Petroleum achieve ExxonMobil Regional Hauler of the year since 2004.

Growing up, I always had a strong interest in transport and trucks which has helped me to become very passionate about my chosen career. My first step into a transport related role was at the tender age of 18.
My role involves managing South Island’s fleet efficiency, operational and driver issues, and emergency response, as well as leading Health and Safety for my team which is a major priority in our industry.  My travels, while at Allied Petroleum, have taken me as far afield as Australia and Thailand.

I have a wonderful family at home; with my partner Michelle, sons Jackson and Connor and my daughter Caitlin. Allied Petroleum are always flexible with time off, be it sick family or finishing early for that ever-important school assembly.

Having two truck-mad boys at home, I am constantly under pressure on the weekends to come into the yard so the boys can look over the trucks! Along the path to my current role, (which has also included a stint as a Driver Trainer) HWR, has shown tremendous support with leadership training and on the job mentoring and guidance. There are always lots of opportunities within HWR such is the diversity of HWR.Within Allied Petroleum, there are great people, good relationships and lots of opportunities. I believe that if you have the drive and determination, you will succeed.

Kate Heinz

Customer Services Representative

I have been with Allied Petroleum for three years as a Customer Services Representative. My role is mostly telephone based where I interact with Customers to provide them with information and help them with inquiries regarding our service. As a Customer Services Rep I work hard at building good relationships with customers and staff on a day to day basis. Before joining Allied Petroleum I was a Manager for NZ Post and was responsible for the day to day operations of a local Post Shop.

My current role sees me dealing with customers over the phone as well as dealing face to face with customers in our Lubricants Warehouse. Part of my role in the Warehouse involves having to operate a forklift and Allied Petroleum supported me towards completing my forklift licence. I enjoy operating the forklift because it adds another interesting dimension to my role.

The work environment is flexible here and there are opportunities to progress within the company. My Manager is great to work with and has a great sense of humour. I really enjoy the people here and everyone brings something unique to the workplace which makes the environment fun to work in. There is never a dull moment!

Lane Montgomerie

Scheduler

I joined Allied Petroleum around two years ago as a Bulk Fuel delivery driver and prior to that I spent a year driving trucks for Hooker Pacific. Recently, I had the opportunity to join the Logistics Team as a Bulk Fuel Scheduler. My role now involves scheduling the bulk fuel deliveries for the Mobil Service Stations and Allied Petroleum’s large commercial customers. As a Scheduler I have the same objective as I did when I was a tanker driver – to make sure that our customers get their bulk fuel delivered on time. My experience as a bulk fuel driver for Allied Petroleum was really helpful because it’s helped me transition quickly into my role as a Scheduler. I enjoy it in the Logistics team because I work alongside a good bunch of people and they’re easy going as well.

My recent career change that Allied Petroleum supported me into has meant that I have a better life /work balance and I can spend more time with my two and a half year old son.

Andrea Young

Bulk Fuel Delivery Driver

In 2007 Andrea was offered a job with Fliways driving B trains from Auckland to National Park. After seven years it was time for a new challenge and an online ad for a tanker driver for Allied Petroleum caught her eye. Now based in Timaru Andrea does bulk fuel deliveries from Central Otago to Christchurch.

What Andrea likes about the job is the freedom. “Everyday you’re on the road. You’re not stuck in an office looking out the same window, you’ve always got changing scenery, every day’s different. It’s a really good lifestyle. You’re always out meeting new people, people are quite happy to talk to you and you get that real feel good buzz at the end of the day.”

As far as getting a job in the industry is concerned, Andrea’s advice is to “just go do it. You won’t regret it.”

Ron Vette

Bulk Fuel Delivery Driver

I was formerly a Concrete Mixer Truck Driver for Allied Concrete who are also part of the HW Richardson Group. I joined Allied Petroleum as a bulk fuel delivery driver fourteen years ago and from those early beginnings I have been delivering bulk fuel to farms in the mid Canterbury area.

What’s great about this job is the day to day interaction with my customers. On top of that I appreciate working for a company who invest in their employees by providing modern and great gear which ultimately makes my job safer and more enjoyable.

I am married and have two grown up daughters and outside of work I enjoy motor sports and indulging in a game of golf (when time permits of course).
