Servicing Tips for your Machinery this Winter

June, 2017

The cold winter months can take a tough toll on machinery. Engine maintenance and servicing during this time of year is essential to reduce the risk of costly repairs and machine downtime. Your engine is particularly vulnerable at start-up, that’s when it really needs the oil to keep flowing.

Cold weather can cause engine oil to flow either too slowly, or not at all, and that can take a toll on your engine. That’s why choosing the right engine oil, the use of quality lubricants, along with correct machine maintenance can make a big difference and help to protect the engine’s vital components. Make sure you always follow the equipment manufacturer’s servicing interval recommendations and oil specifications.

Here’s a few reasons why lubrication is one of the most important steps when servicing your machinery this winter:

  1. Lubricants reduce friction around any moving part within the engine, regular servicing helps to extend the life of your machinery by reducing unnecessary friction and wear and tear on your engine’s internals, and flushing out contaminants in your engine – keeping your engine clean.
  2. Excess oil in your engine can cause damage, just the same as not enough oil in your engine can. When servicing your machinery look for signs of excess oil, built up grease and water leaks. Also ensure you check around any seals for leaks.
  3. High engine temperatures can be a result of poor lubrication. If your engine is operating at a higher than usual temperature, ensure you check your oil levels are high enough. Also check to see if your thermostat is working correctly, and your radiator is clear of debris.
  4. Choosing the right oil for your machinery can make a big impact on fuel efficiency and reducing wear and tear, not only making your machinery last longer, but also saving you money!                                                     Mobil Oil Product Guide
